Somalia based ragtag, the Al Shabaab, has sensationally claimed that Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) used explosives in carrying out "a demolition" of the building, burying 137 hostages alive.
On their Twitter handle believed to be genuine, Al-Shabaab also claimed that "having failed to defeat the mujahideen inside the mall, the Kenyan Government disseminated chemical gases to end the siege."
But in a fast rejoinder, Government Spokesman, Manoah Isipisu, immediately denied the claim, saying that no chemical weapons were used and that the official civilian death toll remains 61.
Isipisu said the three floors of the building caved in after a fire started by the Al-Shabaab attackers caused structural weakness of the building.
He said the death toll still remains at 61 and the number is expected to rise as more bodies are retrieved from the rubble of the building.
The Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility of the attack and said this was a revenge mission due to KDF’s incursion of Somalia.
